Murray Street Upgrade Stage 3
The overall redevelopment of Murray Street has long been identified by Council as a project of major importance to Gawler. Council’s motivation to invest in this level of infrastructure remains unchanged; to support our business operators with an improved trading environment and to meet the expectations of the community and visitors alike with a safe and quality public environment now and into the future, whether experienced by car or on foot. The redevelopment involves widening of the pedestrian paths, installation of pedestrian refuge crossings, improved traffic management devices, amenity improvements such as bins and seating and visual enhancements.
Council approved Stage 3 construction work the budget year 2011/12 to the value of $690,000, involving the treatment of the footpath area along Murray Street extending from the eastern side of Murray Street from Calton Road to Bridge Street.
The following Project time line applies:
- Project design complete.
- Tender documentation complete.
- Tender call commenced and complete.
- Tender assessment Jan / Feb with award late Feb 2012 to Camco SA Pty Ltd.
- Construction commencing early March 2012 with duration of 16 weeks.
With the Contractor is required to make due allowances for the following:
- Maintaining of two-way traffic flow in Murray St.
- Choice of construction methodology (inclusive of equipment choices) to minimise disruption of construction activities on traffic flows, pedestrian access and on-street car parking.
- Minimisation of disruption to on street car parking by limiting lengths of work areas open at any one time.
- Maintenance of pedestrian street access in a safe and all weather access at all normal trading times.”
Stage 4 construction is currently being scheduled for the 2012/13 year but is conditional upon approval of funds by the Council in next years’ budget. As a part of Stage 4 planning options traffic management at the intersection of Calton Road/Murray Street and Walker Place will be reviewed. It was previously proposed to install traffic signals at this intersection however given that it is several years since the proposal was adopted and more information is now available about possible future traffic volumes and patterns this is being reviewed.

Green Gully Stormwater Project
A historical problem has existed with the stormwater disposal from the catchment areas of Barossa Avenue and East Terrace discharging into the top end of Gozzard St. The problem is further compounded by the lack of any existing stormwater infrastructure in Gozzard St apart from two SEPs at the bottom end of Gozzard St adjacent the intersection of McKinley Avenue During periods of high rainfall intensity sheet water flows are experienced entering the top end of Gozzard Street from adjacent streets (Barossa Avenue and East Terrace) with resultant flooding occurring to properties on the low side of Gozzard Street as the discharge follows the natural course of drainage into Green Gully which is situated behind those properties.
Traditionally the stormwater disposal from the catchment area has been into Green Gully to the north of Gozzard Street but this is private property and such discharge is causing serious cause erosion of the gully embankments and increasing downstream flooding risks to private properties since there is no downstream drainage path other that through private property.
A preliminary engineering investigation was completed during 2009/10 that identified that the most appropriate option was to provide an underground system of pits and pipes from East Terrace along Gozzard Street/ Rudall and Ayres Street with discharge into the South Para. Council then authorized design work to be carried out during 2010/11 with construction work being approved for the budget year 2011/12 to the value of $810,000.
The project was awarded to Camco SA Pty Ltd late 2011, with the project expected to be completed April 2012.
