connectivity, childand youth-friendly
neighbourhoods, newandadditional
recreational facilities and improved
healthcare services havebeen identifiedby
thecommunity as important.
Local government plays an important role
in shapingandmanagingpublichealth
outcomes through the services it delivers.
The roleof Gawler Council in thedesign,
creationandmaintenanceof public
infrastructure, spaces, places and facilities
canhavedirect and indirect healthbenefits
for thecommunity.
The roleof volunteers is critical, particularly
as thecommunity continues toage. The
need for Council toattract and support
volunteers in thecommunity hasbeen
identifiedas anessential ingredient in
buildingcommunity involvement and
cohesion. (Gawler Council was the first
council toadopt aVolunteer Charter and
toactivelypromote volunteering for all
ages).
Withan increase in thenumber of older
citizens, it is essential that planningoccurs
toaddress associated issues including
availability of appropriatehousing, access
to social andalliedhealth services and
access tocommunity facilities.
GawlerCouncil is
committed tobuilding
communitycapacity
and increasing social
inclusion fora strong
and integrated
community.This
includesmaintaining
andexpanding
buildingscurrently
used forcommunity
activitiesaswell as
providing forarange
of sportsandother
informal recreational
opportunities.
