Achievements&FuturePlans for 2013/14
CommunityPlan
In the2013/2014Council commenceda reviewof the
TownofGawlerStrategicPlan2010-2018,with the
intentionof developinganewCommunity (Strategic)
Plan for thenext decade.
The releaseof the “PictureThis”DiscussionPaper
marked thebeginningof this reviewprocess inearly
2014,with thecommunity invited toparticipate ina
number of opportunities toshape thedirectionof the
2104-2014CommunityPlan.
Theparticipationof residentsandbusinessowners in
theconsultationeventsandsubmissions received from
localsandkeystakeholdersexceededexpectations.
TheGawlerCommunityPlan2014-2024will beakey
document for both thecommunityandCouncil, as itwill
identify thecommunity’saspirations for the futureand
beused toguideCouncil’sdecision-making inorder
todeliver the typeof townandcommunitywewant for
Gawler.
Itwill providedirection toCouncil on theallocationof its
resources for the typeand level of serviceprovided to
thecommunity, aswell as identifying the roleCouncil
will play inadvocating for servicesprovidedbyother
spheresof government, non-government organisations
and theprivatesector.
AnimalManagementPlan
TheAnimalManagement Planwascompleted inApril
2014 followinganextensivecommunityconsultation
processandwasapprovedby theDogandCat
Management Boardon28May2014.
Significant community feedbackwas receivedand
considered, helping toshape thecompletedPlan.
Gawler’snewAnimalManagement Plancoversawide
rangeof animalmanagement issues includingways to
minimise increasingdogattacks inCouncil parksand
reserves.Theanimalmanagement plan runsuntil 2017.
ThePlan includesaspecific focusondogs, catsand
encourages responsiblepet ownership.
FuturePlan -AnimalManagementPlan
Akeystrategy in thePlan is tominimisedogattacks in
Council parksand reserves.
During2014/15Council’snewAnimalManagement Plan
will investigate implementationof ‘dogon leashareas’
tomakeour publicareassafe fromdangerousand
menacingdogs.ThePlanwill alsoconsider parksand
reserveswheredogscanbeoff leashor prohibited.
ThePlanwill exploreways to reduce theenvironmental
harmcausedbycats.Gawler’sAnimalManagement
Planwill consider the introductionof cat exclusionzones
adjoiningwildlifeareasandmakea recommendation
toCouncil. 2014/15will further seea reviewof thevery
successful DogRegistrationDoor knock.
LibraryServices
Local residentscontinued toenjoy thebenefitsof the
statewide ‘OneCardNetwork’withGawler libraryusers
accessingover 13,000 items fromother librariesaround
SouthAustralia.TheOneCardNetworkcontinues to
exceedall previousexpectations regards itspopularity
anduse.
FuturePlan - LibraryServices
A reviewof theGawlerPublicLibraryandnewLibrary
StrategicPlanwill commence in2014/15.
CommunitySupport
TheTownofGawlerCommunityGrantswas re-launched
in2013/14withnumeroussmaller grantsconsolidated
into thesingleCommunityDevelopmentGrant.This
coincidedwithasignificant increase in fundingbeing
provided,with$25,000provided to local organisations.
ASportspersonSponsorshipprogramwasestablished
to recogniseandencourage theachievementsof young
residentsofGawler 12-25yearsof agewho represent
sport at aStateorNational level.During thisfinancial
year nineyoungpeople representing indifferent sports
weresupportedbyCouncil.
FuturePlan -CommunitySupport
Thiscommunitysupportwill continue in2014/15with
Communitygrants tobe launched in late2014and the
SportspersonSponsorships toagainbeoffered.
RegionalHealthPlan
TheTownofGawler hasakey role inproviding
supportiveenvironments for our community to lead
healthy lifestyles.During2013/14 theBarossaCouncil,
TheTownofGawler, LightRegional Council and the
DistrictCouncil ofMallalaworked incollaborationwith
Regional DevelopmentAustralia (Barossa) todevelopa
PublicHealthandWellbeingPlan for theBarossa, Light
andLowerNorthernRegion (Gawler).
