Theplanningprocesswasanopportunity tocollectively
identifypublicHealthpriorities for the region (and
Gawler) and toestablishacoordinatedapproach to
promotingcommunitywellbeing.
TheRegional PublicHealthandWellbeingPlanwas
developed inaccordancewithLocalGovernment’s
responsibilitiesunder theSouthAustralianPublicHealth
Act 2011.
FuturePlan -RegionalHealthPlan
It isanticipated that the regional PublicHealthand
WellbeingPlanwill bepresented toCouncil for adoption
inearly2014/15anda local actionplanwill bedevised
andpresented toCouncil for adoption in thenew
financial year.
PublicHealth
TheHealthandRegulatoryServicessectioncontinue
todeliver services to residentsof thearea including
inspectionof foodpremises, auditingof foodsafety
programs, licencingof supported residential facilities,
inspectionsof publicpools, assessment ofwastewater
worksapplications, registrationofwarmwater
systems (cooling towers) andgeneral healthand food
complaints.
Throughout theyearEnvironmental Healthworked
closelywith local businessownersandcommunity to
provideup todate information relating to the introduction
of thenewSouthAustralianPublicHealthAct.The
newPublicHealthAct has introducedanoutcome
basedapproach toPublicHealth.ThenewAct has
also required thedevelopment and implementationof a
PublicHealthPlan.TheTownofGawler hasadopteda
strategicapproach toPublicHealthPlanningasdetailed
above.

With theappointment of anewTeamLeader tooversee
theHealthandRegulatoryServicessection, a reviewof
servicesandstandardswill beundertaken in2014/15.
The reviewwill focusonproductivityandservice
standards, scopeof activitiesandcontribution to thenew
CommunityPlanstrategicdirections forGawler.
FoodSafetyWeek
FoodSafetyWeekNovember 2013 joint promotionwith
LightRegional Council targetingvolunteer/community
groups. Apubliceducationsessionwasheldat the
HewettCommunityCentrewithpresentations fromLight
Regional Council,TownofGawler and theDepartment
ofHealth. Environmental HealthOfficers fromLight and
GawlerCouncilsprovidedapresentationon theFood
SafetyStandardsasapplicable tocommunitygroups
andvolunteer organisations.Over 45peopleattended
thepubliceducationsessionat theHewettCommunity
Centreand theDepartment ofHealthprovideda
presentationon labelling requirements for community
groups thatmaybeselling foodat fund raisingevents.
All attendees receivedan informationpackandat
theconclusionof thesessiona feedback formwas
completedbyeachattendee.Due toanoverwhelming
positive responseCouncil isplanninganother event/
activity for foodsafetyweek in2014.
HomeAssist andCommunityCareProgram
On13March, 2014, theTownofGawler held its third
“Ageing inStyleExpo”. Theaimof theExpowas to
showcase thediverse rangeof activitiesandservices
available in the local area,withaprimary focuson
increasing theconnectionandparticipationof theaged
within theGawler community.
TheGawlerHomeAssist andCommunityCare (HACC)
teamcontinue toprovidequalitysupport services to
older peopleandyounger peoplewithadisability in
theGawler area.Theofficecontinues tooperateat
theGawlerElderlyCentrewhichenhances theHACC
team’sconnectionswith the local community.This
enablesCouncil todeliver inhomesupport services
to frail older people, older peoplewithdisabilitiesand
their carers.This in turnenablespeople tobemore
independent in their ownhomesand in thecommunity,
enhancing their qualityof lifeandpreventingpremature
admission to long term residential care.TheHACC
Program is jointly fundedby theCommonwealthand
StateGovernments. InSouthAustralia theProgram is
administered through theOffice for theAgeingof the
Department for FamiliesandCommunities.
HACCDigital EnhancementProject
Federally funded through theDepartment of Social
Services theHACCProgram initiativewill linkhigh
definitionvideoconferencing technology thatwill support
systemandoperational improvements to theexisting
HACCservicedeliverymethodology. Thedevelopment
of thesedigital enhancements thatwill improve the
deliveryofHACCserviceswill beshowcased toother
Councils.

TheTownofGawler recognises thevaluablecontribution
volunteersprovide in thedeliveryofCouncil programs
