Activation
Public spaces have a significant effect on the overall wellbeing of individuals and the community as a collective. As social venues, these places help to strengthen social identity and offer opportunities for community togetherness and understanding.
Gawler has a rich tradition of being a place where people come together and embrace the concept of community – shared attitudes, values and identity. For thousands of years the Kaurna people utilised Gawler, in particular the junction of the North and South Para and Gawler Rivers, for food, shelter and importantly as a significant meeting place. The idea of Gawler as a community meeting place has continued and remains a key aspect of modern and contemporary Gawler.
Activation Strategy
In July 2018 Council adopted the ‘Gawler Activation Strategy 2018-2024’ to encouraging activation initiatives throughout the Town of Gawler and achieve it's vision of “a vibrant and active, event filled council through the activation of designated spaces”.
The ‘Gawler Activation Strategy 2018-2024’ encourages a sense of place and excitement through increased community celebration, interaction and gathering within Gawler. Council will provide, partner, promote and encourage events and activity that builds community capacity, improve community cohesion and enhance the vibrancy of the town through this Strategy.

What is the purpose of the Gawler Activation Strategy?
The goal of the Strategy is to guide the decisions of the Council so that they can allocate funds from the Council Budget to support outdoor events and activities. Each year, the Council reviews and approves what support will be provided through the Activation Calendar budget for various events that happen throughout the year.
These events and activities aim to make people feel connected and encourage a sense of place to help improve wellbeing.
Why Review the Strategy?
Reviewing the Strategy is an important opportunity to gather community feedback, identify gaps and consider new opportunities that can make the Strategy better. The Council can then provide a Strategy that delivers positive outcomes that are valued and reflective of what the community wants.
