Activation

Public spaces have a significant effect on the overall wellbeing of individuals and the community as a collective. As social venues, these places help to strengthen social identity and offer opportunities for community togetherness and understanding.

Gawler has a rich tradition of being a place where people come together and embrace the concept of community – shared attitudes, values and identity. For thousands of years the Kaurna people utilised Gawler, in particular the junction of the North and South Para and Gawler Rivers, for food, shelter and importantly as a significant meeting place. The idea of Gawler as a community meeting place has continued and remains a key aspect of modern and contemporary Gawler.

There is a high level of activity within Gawler throughout the year that provides a broad range of opportunities for members of the community to be engaged within their local environment. These events, activities and programs are delivered in many different ways and by many different organisations, such as community and service groups, businesses and Council.

What is the Gawler Activation Strategy?

What is the Gawler Activation Strategy? The ‘2018-2024 Gawler  Activation Strategy’ is an important strategic plan of Council. It’s designed to help bring life and energy to Gawler by supporting events and activities that make people feel connected to the community.

These events aim to create a lively atmosphere where people come together to have fun and enjoy being in Gawler.

What is the purpose of the Gawler Activation Strategy?

The goal of the Strategy is to guide the decisions of the Council so that they can allocate funds from the Council Budget to support outdoor events and activities.  Each year, the Council reviews and approves what support will be provided through the Activation Calendar budget for various events that happen throughout the year.
These events and activities aim to make people feel connected and encourage a sense of place to help improve wellbeing.

Why Review the Strategy?

The current Strategy was approved by the Council in July 2018, and now it’s time to hear from the community to ensure the Strategy matches what people need, want, and believe in right now.

Reviewing the Strategy is an important opportunity to gather community feedback, identify gaps and consider new opportunities that can make the Strategy better.  The Council can then provide a Strategy that delivers positive outcomes that are valued and reflective of what the community wants.
