John Bolton

Gawler The Athens of the South.
"Colonial Athens 1839 -1857" EH COOMBE

John explores the mistaken idea that Greco-Roman statues were unpainted white marble. Many years after their discovery, we understand these statues were painted. John examines his statues, Venus rising out of the ocean where she was born to be Goddess of love and the statue of David, a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture, made in pure white marble purposefully unpainted by Michelangelo.
In Greco-Roman times the sculptor created the piece and it then was painted by a separate craftsperson. John’s Venus comes from Zaltron's Statues in Adelaide and he umm’d and ahh’d about whether to paint her. Ultimately his decision to paint Venus in the style of Botticelli and leave David untouched comments on the historical intentions of the artists the statues are modelled on. The two finished pieces contrast each other at opposite ends of "The Porch" where Gawler Music Studio have occasional shows.
