Gawler Australia Day Awards and Breakfast

On 26 January the Town of Gawler, in partnership with the Apex Club of Gawler, is excited to invite the entire community along to a ‘Virtual Australia Day Breakfast’.

In a break from recent tradition, the community is invited to have a Covid-Safe breakfast at a choice of three hotels in Gawler. The Kingsford Hotel, The Exchange Hotel and the Prince Albert Hotel are opening up early to broadcast the Council’s Australia Day Awards and Citizenship ceremonies on their big screens. As per previous years, the local service clubs will all be involved by cooking a free breakfast for you all at the three locations.

“With significant risks in holding large-scale events due to possible changes to pandemic restrictions or an outbreak of COVID-19 in South Australia, Council and the Apex Club made the joint decision to scale back the event rather than cancel it,” said Mayor Redman. “The community can still enjoy the Australia Day Breakfast and Awards Ceremony by booking a table directly with the hotels who will be operating under their Covid-Safe plans to ensure we can all enjoy the morning in a safe environment.”

To pre-book your table call the hotel that you want to attend:

Council is pleased to announce that Dr Naomi Rutten is Council’s Australia Day Ambassador for 2021. Mayor Redman said, “Naomi’s passion is around healing the effects of trauma and abuse experienced in childhood, adolescence and adulthood and is excited to take this opportunity to raise awareness and improve mental health services in Gawler”.

Naomi will be speaking at the Awards about her work and contribution to the community. Council acknowledges the importance of celebrating those who have been especially involved with going the extra mile for the community as well as welcoming and rejoicing our new Australian Citizens who will be officially presented on the day.

“Council is committed to encouraging involvement in community life and feel honoured that we have so many people in our midst making a positive contribution to Gawler and the wider region,” said Mayor Karen Redman.

The five categories of awards and winners that will be presented at this year’s Australia Day ceremony are:

  • Citizen of the Year: Mr Gavin Launer,
  • Young Citizen of the Year: Ms Scarlett Illman,
  • Corporate Citizen of the Year: Ms Scarlett Illman,
  • Community Event of the Year - Joint Winners: Gawler Cinema Silver Screenings and the Australia Day Awards Breakfast
  • Community Group of the Year: Wheels in Motion.

“Each year I personally look forward to this event as it is a great opportunity to welcome our new citizens and congratulate our Australia Day award winners." said Mayor Redman.

Breakfast service will start at 8am with the official ceremonies being broadcast from 8.30am. The morning is estimated to conclude at approximately 9.30am.
