Princes Park Community Recreation Hub Stage 1 – Community Basketball Court Open to the Public

Town of Gawler is pleased to announce the completion of Stage 1 of the Princes Park Recreation Hub which will provide a great recreation space for the Gawler community to enjoy.

Key Points:

  • Completion of Stage 1 of the Princes Park Recreation Hub
  • This project forms part of the Essex Park & Gawler Showgrounds Regional Sporting Precinct Master Plan
  • Promotes opportunities for Town of Gawler residents to be active and connected

The new recreation hub is designed with families in mind, with a new full sized basketball court, barbeque facilities, seating, and shade all forming part of the $768,000 Stage 1 project. The court has timed lighting for illuminated play until 8pm.

‘The Town of Gawler has been fortunate to receive $356,500 in grant funding from the Minister for Planning, through the State Government’s Open Space Grant Program financed through the Planning and Development Fund, toward this new asset to support an active and healthy community’ says Mayor Karen Redman. ‘This is the first investment towards delivering the vision of the Essex Park & Gawler Showgrounds Regional Sporting Precinct Master Plan, adopted by Council in 2021. Council is pleased to offer this new area for all ages to enjoy’.

The court surface is a delight to behold with colourful swirls and foursquare design, selected by the Community from three design options in May 2022. The court design provides a new vibrancy to this part of Princes Park while also offering more play options for families.

‘Supporting community activity through projects like this new basketball court provide physical and mental health, and social wellbeing benefits that comes with being active and connecting with people’ commented Mayor Redman.

Council CEO Henry Inat says, “The provision of infrastructure for unstructured activity such as a community basketball court and play spaces were seen as key inclusions within the Essex Park & Gawler Showgrounds precinct. Community feedback was really positive in terms of including infrastructure to compliment the sporting and event focus of the area. It’s wonderful to see the new court available for the community to enjoy.”

Council are planning a community event on Saturday 22 April 2023 to celebrate the opening, more information on this event will be available soon.
