The Town of Gawler are looking to reduce our communities’ impact on the environment by trialing compostable doggy poo bags in our dog park at Clonlea Reserve.

Key points:
o The dog waste bags are eco-friendly and 100% compostable.
o Bags can be placed in bins provided at the park or in your own green lid bin, FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics).
o We are seeking community feedback on this initiative and want to hear from you.

The initial trial will take place at the Clonlea Reserve dog park where dog owners are encouraged to provide their feedback to inform our decision before implementing this across the town.

Compostable dog poo bags are made from plant-based materials which will break down over time, making them environmentally friendly and safe for the environment. Unlike traditional plastics, plant-based plastics break down quickly in the environment, reducing waste, pollution and can be easily turned into compost.

When placed in FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics) bins compostable bags and dog waste can then be processed and transformed into soil for parks, farms, and gardens at the NAWMA green waste holding facility.

"It's important to demonstrate the circular economy in action to our community. Council believes these new bags will be a hit with people, so we are keen to hear our dog owner's feedback.” says Mayor Karen Redman.

We think these bags will serve as valuable replacements for plastic bags, which cause a lot of damage to the environment because they don’t decompose quickly. To avoid contamination dog owners are asked to please ensure only compostable poo bags are placed in the bin provided with no other rubbish.

“The Town of Gawler is already ahead of other communities in the area when it comes to utilising their FOGO bins and this is another great step in the right direction” says Henry Inat, CEO.

Compostable bags can be identified by the seedling logo which will be on all bags as well as the signage placed at the park. To ensure these bags serve the needs of the dog owners in our community we are seeking feedback on a number of factors associated with the bags.

The Town of Gawler would love to hear your feedback during this trial by answering a short survey.
