Playground and Inclusivity Strategy- for all children and all families

The Town of Gawler is excited to announce the development of a new playground and inclusivity strategy, to guide improvements and investment across the Council’s playgrounds over the next 15 years.

Key points:

  • A strategy for all children and all families in Gawler
  • How our community can get involved and contribute to the improvement of playgrounds in Gawler

The Town of Gawler’s ‘Playground and Inclusivity Strategy’ will support a community centred approach to planning for play.

“Gawler needs better playgrounds. This new strategy will achieve that aim for all children and all families” said Mayor Karen Redman.

The Town of Gawler’s Playground and Inclusivity Strategy sets out the following key objectives:

  • Develop playgrounds for better health, wellbeing and connectedness
  • Keep playgrounds welcoming and interesting for all children and families
  • Improve the quality and diversity of the play experience
  • Foster sustainable playgrounds that are resilient to a changing climate
  • Partner with our community to make better playgrounds

“I would like to encourage our community to participate in the development of this new strategy, which will guide our efforts to continually improve our playgrounds for all levels of ability, right across the age spectrum,” said CEO Henry Inat.

Community and stakeholder engagement will commence in March 2023, with the launch of a public survey. This will be followed by public feedback forms, to inform the vision, objectives and key directions of the strategy, as well as provide feedback on the Town of Gawler’s existing playgrounds.

On Sunday, 2nd April 2023, at 10.00am the Town of Gawler will be hosting a special ‘Inclusive Play Day’ at Clonlea Park, in honour of ‘World Autism Awareness Day.’

“The timing of our Playday to coincide with World Autism Awareness Day reinforces the need to optimise opportunities for all ages and abilities in our playgrounds including people with different learning, social and physical abilities and styles. Even so, this new strategy is for everyone”, says Mayor Karen Redman.

The Town of Gawler’s ‘Playground and Inclusivity Strategy’ will be developed in line with the Town of Gawler and other relevant disability action plans. Even so, all children and all families are welcome to provide input so we get the best strategy for all.
