Welcome from Mayor Karen Redman
On behalf of the Council, including our Elected Members, Chief Executive Officer, staff and our wider community, I warmly welcome you to the Town of Gawler.
The Town of Gawler acknowledges that the town is located on the traditional country of the Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains. It recognises and respects their cultural heritage, beliefs and relationship with the land.
Located 42 kilometres north of Adelaide, our town is embedded in history and our natural riverine environment. Gawler is a short drive to the Barossa and Clare Valleys, Adelaide Hills, Murray-lands and Riverland regions and has rich history becoming South Australia’s first regional settlement back in 1839. Prior to this, Gawler has been a meeting place for aboriginal peoples for thousands of years.
You will join close to 26,000 residents who call the Town of Gawler home and I hope that as you become more settled, you will become an active and engaged member of our local community.
This page has been created to welcome you into our town and give you information on the basic services we offer. Below you will find information on Council services, the community, what to do and what to see and information about your new Council.
We hope Gawler proves to be a rewarding and fulfilling place for you to live, work and play, and I encourage you to contact us whenever you need further information or assistance.
Mayor Karen Redman
For many thousands of years the Kaurna people have been the Traditional Custodians of Adelaide and the Adelaide Plains, including the land that is now the Town of Gawler. Kaurna people, both past and present, have a strong connection to Gawler and its many areas of significance. This strong spiritual relationship to Country, their cultural and heritage beliefs are still just as important to the living Kaurna people today.
Following European Settlement, the Town of Gawler became South Australia’s first regional settlement. Gawler and Adelaide are the only two South Australian settlements that were surveyed by Colonel William Light.
The Gawler community recognises and highly values this cultural heritage. Gawler’s community remains steadfast in its desire to protect and reinforce its unique character.
Council Members
The community elects their Council Members every four years and the next general elections happen in 2026. With nearly 34% of the Town of Gawler voting in 2022, Council elections are the biggest single voluntary civic participation activity in the State.
