Gawler Civic Centre Official Launch Festival - 7 to 13 April 2019

April 2019 marks just over 2 years of demolition, extensive remediation and construction, final commissioning and moving in at the Gawler Civic Centre. To celebrate, Council is holding a seven day Gawler Civic Centre Official Launch Festival.

The week of celebrations will commence with the Official Launch Day on Sunday 7 April 2019 at 10am for a 10.30am start, Gawler Civic Centre.

Following a Smoking Ceremony conducted by local Kaurna Community, Senator Lucy Gichuhi, Senator of South Australia, in conjunction with Mayor Redman will officially open the Civic Centre and formally give the iconic buildings back to the community.

Everyone is then invited in to the Civic Centre to explore the refurbished buildings. Guided tours will be operating all day and there will be a range of community performances, roving entertainment, art exhibitions, displays and presentations both inside the Centre and throughout the outdoor precinct. The Gawler Club will be officially opened by Mayor Redman on this day at 12.00noon.

Murray Street will be closed from Lyndoch Road to Calton Road and into Walker Place, to create a market and entertainment precinct. This outdoor precinct will operate from 11am to 4pm.

Join us for the formal opening of ‘Into the Light’.

Monday 8 April 2019 commencing at 7pm in the Institute Hall, Level 1, Gawler Civic Centre.

In this exhibition, Gawler’s history is interpreted through the prisms of the Kaurna people and their connection to country, early colonisation, exploration and the growth of the town and the creation of cultural institutions, such as the Gawler Institute, which fostered the 19th Century obsession with scientific scholarship and academic enquiry.

Following an opening address by Mayor Karen Redman and a guest talk by Denise Schumann OAM the exhibition designer, the exhibition will be opened by the Hon John Dawkins MLC. Guests will then be invited to tour the exhibition.

Denise Schumann has worked extensively across South Australia as a historian and cultural heritage consultant. Since 2012, she has worked tirelessly with the Town of Gawler to revitalise its civic facilities and its heritage collections culminating in the development of the new Civic Centre and in particular the iconic Reading Room, Heritage Gallery and Cultural Heritage Research Centre. Denise will provide insights into this complex project and the creative process behind the inaugural exhibition ‘Into the Light’.

Refreshments will be served. This is a free event however places are limited.

The final Gawler Civic Centre Official Launch Festival event will be a

GALA Evening featuring Daniel Koek - Gawler born…star of London’s West End!

The stunning Institute Hall will provide a grand venue for the Gala Cabaret evening which will complete our Official Launch celebration week on Saturday 13th April.

Daniel Koek’s career has been quite a journey; starting in Gawler, he won the coveted Young Artist Scholarship before heading to Amsterdam with the State Opera where he performed lead in a new production for the National Youth Opera Festival. From there, Daniel moved on to London and the West End became his home. In 2013, Daniel was one of the youngest actors ever to take lead as Jean Valjean in Les Miserable in 2013, and later performed as Tony in West Side Story’s 50th Anniversary production.

This local boy from Gawler has a repertoire of leading roles under his belt. He has delighted the West End and the world with his powerhouse vocals and was recently honoured to record the 'Royal Platinum Love song' which went to number 1 in the classical charts overnight, celebrating the Queen and Duke's 70th wedding anniversary.

Daniel is excited to headline the Gawler Civic Centre’s Gala Evening and team with:
Sam Brittain – Daniel’s cousin and Gawler born singer, songwriter and guitarist. Sam’s unique sound blend of alternative country & folk songs rings out with an honest and unadulterated simplicity.
Mark Stefanoff - music theatre performer who has performed around the world – Kinky Boots (Australian Tour), Hairspray (Arena Spectacular), Godspell (Australian Revival), The Boy from Oz and Cats.
Nathan Stafford - Gawler born singer, dancer and upcoming talent. Still attending Trinity College, Nathan has been in several professional productions including The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz.
