Communication Boards in Playgrounds
The Town of Gawler is installing five Communication Boards across the town within existing fenced playgrounds, to assist making our play spaces more inclusive.
A communication board is a device that displays photos, symbols, or illustrations to help people with limited language skills express themselves. The person can gesture, point to, or blink at images to communicate with others. Town of Gawler Council has paired with local speech pathologist Keira Stone to help develop the signs, including selecting some site specific images based on community feedback.
Council has five of these boards, which are located in the following fenced playgrounds (expected to be installed in January 2022):
1) Apex Park Playground (donated by Cr Nathan Shanks)
2) Princess Street / Redbanks Road Playground
3) Calton Road/Duldig Ave Playground
4) Bacton Street/Dalton Street Playground
5) Fifth Street/Adelaide Road Playground
