Gawler Railway Electrification Project

Early Works

The Gawler Rail Electrification Project is currently undertaking various early works including;

  • Services relocations/works across the rail corridor; and
  • Geotechnical investigations.

The works are typically on the verge, adjacent to the rail corridor, and may include traffic management on the nearby road.

These works are typically minor in nature and may involve excavating trenches and backfilling, installation of new stobie poles etc.

Various community notices have been prepared by DPTI and Lendlease (the head contractor) which are being distributed to the near by residents and businesses (of the respective works) and will continue to be prepared and delivered as the works progress.

Should you wish to view details of the upcoming works please view the Link to the community notices.

King Street Bridge

DPTI is currently investigating the impacts and options for the King Street Bridge as a result of the rail electrification whereby there is currently insufficient room for the overhead wiring in the current configuration. DPTI is engaging with Town of Gawler on this matter and will also engage with the community once more information is known over the next few months.

GREP Project

The Gawler Rail Electrification Project (GREP), being delivered by the Department for Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI), will result in the electrification and modernisation of the Adelaide - Gawler rail line, with more than 8km of this track within the Town of Gawler, and will deliver a faster, cleaner and more reliable service. This upgrade, combined with the existing Seaford line, will effectively deliver a 78km electrified network from Gawler to Seaford. The $615 million project is jointly funded by the State Government; contributing $395 million, and the Australian Government, contributing $220 million.

Once complete the electrified line will support increased capacity and future growth for development along the rail corridor and in northern Adelaide. Other benefits of an electrified line include:

  • Clean and green high performance trains delivering an improved customer experience;
  • Better reliability and safety; and
  • Encourage people to take public transport and leave their cars at home.

The scope of works of the project includes:

  • Electrification of the Adelaide - Gawler rail line and Dry Creek Railcar Depot which includes masts, gantries and overhead wiring system;
  • New signalling system;
  • Pedestrian level crossing enhancements;
  • Fencing of the rail corridor; and
  • Acquisition of additional three-car electric trains (introduced in stages following completion of the electrification works).

Lendlease was appointed as the head contractor for the design and construction of Stage One of the electrification of the rail line between Adelaide and Salisbury in January 2018 and then in July 2018 this was extended to include Stage Two; electrification of the rail line of from Salisbury to Gawler. Employment opportunities on the Gawler Rail Electrification Project are available through NorthHub, an onsite employment, skills and training centre established by Lendlease. To register your details please visit or call 1300 731 071.

Detailed design works commenced in early 2018 for the Adelaide to Salisbury section and are now underway for the Salisbury to Gawler section.

The majority of the significant construction works within Gawler will be undertaken during 2021.

The introduction of the additional electric trains will be from 2021.
