Draft Art Exhibits and Exhibitions in Council Managed Venues Policy

The Town of Gawler has developed a draft Art Exhibits and Exhibitions in Council Managed Venues Policy to assist in the promotion of community arts and artists in Gawler through the use of exhibition spaces in some Council venues.

Council would like to thank all those who responded to this consultation, your input and feedback is highly valued. As a result of the feedback received through this process the Council adopted the Art Exhibits and Exhibitions in Council Managed Venues Policy in July 2018.


Council supports community arts in a number of ways. Some arts initiatives that Council is already supporting and implementing include:

  • Gawler Fringe.
  • Youth Urban Arts Program.
  • Public art - murals, sculptures, mosaics, etc.
  • Entrance Statements.
  • Grants - Community Grants, Youth Artist Sponsorship Program.
  • Support of initiatives such as SALA, Festival of Words, Gawler Biennial Art Award.
  • School holiday programs.
  • Arts initiatives with local schools.
  • The Gawler Arts and Culture Strategy and Public Art Framework.

To further promote art within the community, Council would like to develop exhibition spaces in some Council managed venues. The draft Art Exhibits and Exhibitions in Council Managed Venues’ Policy has been developed to facilitate these spaces. The policy aims to ensure that:

  • Various artists and arts groups in our community can participate in utilising the exhibition spaces in an annual exhibition program.
  • Accessibility to art is increased for the broader community.

Council is currently undertaking Stakeholder engagement regarding the draft policy and also welcomes comment from interested members of the community. Comments can be submitted via the following methods:

The draft Arts Exhibits and Exhibitions in Council Managed Venues Policy has been created as an overarching policy to provide a framework for the management of Exhibition Spaces for the exhibition of Community Arts within any Council managed venues. Therefore it does not speak to specific Council venues or offices. The policy does allow for Council to determine where Exhibition Spaces could or will be established across any of its sites, for example the Gawler Administration Centre or the Gawler Civic Centre. Once a site has had an exhibition space developed within it, that is a gallery hanging system installed, that space will fall under this policy. Spaces likely to be utilised as exhibition spaces are public foyers, hallways/corridors in public areas of a building or meeting rooms.
