Gawler Central Railway Station

A colourful mural at Gawler Central Railway Station created in 2022 celebrates the life and dedication of Rail Care volunteer Marlene Joy MacLennan.

Marlene, who volunteered at the station for 35 years, was remembered for her devotion and for her ever-present smile as she greeted train drivers in the morning with a coffee or tea.

And now, Marlene Joy MacLennan will be immortalised at Gawler Central Station, where she actively contributed its beautification as a member of RailCare’s volunteer team. The community-led initiative supports ‘greening’ the neighbourhood through rail revegetation projects.

Since 2015 with Marlene's help, almost 10,000 native plant species have been planted along Adelaide’s rail network through the work of dedicated volunteers.

The mural encapsulates Marlene’s passions in finer detail, and features a crow holding an Adelaide Crows scarf on her shoulder to represent her love for the team, as well as a crucifix earring to signify her Christian faith.

The artwork was complete by street artist Kyle Armstrong (Whale Tale).
