Communication impacts upon learning, confidence building, relationships, social participation, and overall wellbeing. Some people have complex communication needs and require more than speech to communicate effectively. Around 14% of people with a communication disability require regular assistance.
Aided Language Displays are one form of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) that can support effective communication and meaningful interaction. They display photos, symbols, or illustrations to help people with limited language skills to express themselves. Individuals can gesture, point to, or blink at images to communicate with others.
Playground Aided Language Boards
Aided Language Boards, or Play Communication Boards, are located within these five fenced Town of Gawler playgrounds:
- Apex Park / Miyurna-itya, Gawler
- Calton Road, Gawler East
- Lime Kiln / Princess Park, Willaston
- Adelaide Road / Fifth Street, Gawler South
- Bacton Street, Evanston

These boards were developed by the Town of Gawler in partnership with Keira Stone Speech Pathology, with community engagement helping to incorporate suitable design elements and to ensure appropriate placement of the boards within each playground.
Aided Language Boards are for everyone - not just people with communication difficulties. By using them, you’re helping to model inclusive communication and support shared understanding.
And there’s more to come! The Town of Gawler is continuing its partnership with Keira Stone Speech Pathology to improve communication access in more community spaces and Council facilities.
