Remembering Courageous Women Mural

The Remembering Courageous Women Mural at Pocket Park on Whitelaw Terrace was a fantastic initiative started by the Zonta Club of Gawler and the Gawler Domestic Violence Network to build awareness around the issue of domestic violence and honour the victims who have suffered.

The artist of the piece Sandra Sullivan says, “My intention for the mural was to celebrate women and their children and to picture them in a place where their memory is honoured. I wanted to eliminate any political or judgmental elements and instead highlight them in a place of safety and beauty and to pay homage to women, from all different cultures and backgrounds.”

Statistics show that on average, one woman is killed every week at the hands of a current or former partner. A statistic these organisations are working to change with their work. The mural is a step towards this creating awareness and proving place of quiet contemplation for those who choose to sit, reflect, and gain strength.
