Cultural Heritage Centre
Located at the Gawler Civic Centre, the Cultural Heritage Centre allows the community to experience and interact with the specialized and significant Gawler Heritage Collection through exhibitions, education programmes and expert talks.
It also provides a dedicated space for research and learning which will broaden our understanding of the thoughts, actions, people and events which have shaped the story of Gawler.
Experiences to visit
Since it opening in April 2019, our Heritage Gallery exhibitions have covered such diverse themes as early colonial Gawler and the Kaurna people who have lived in this area for many thousands of years and celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Institute Building. We have also delved into food production in Gawler, and celebrated our rich history of music and theatre.
The current exhibition, Down the Line: the History of Communications in Gawler is the fifth exhibition at the Heritage Gallery. Gawler Connects to the World explores the importance of long-distance communication and how the postal service, the telegraph and the telephone were vital in keeping Gawler connected to the world.
The Down the Line exhibition was awarded a Interpretation Australia National Award for Excellence in November 2023.

Research Centre
The Cultural Heritage Research Centre, located on the lower ground floor, allows researchers, students and the public the opportunity to access the large and unique collection of artefacts, archives, photographs and books that compose the Gawler Heritage Collection. The Local History Collection is also available at the Research Centre.

Monday 1pm-4pm
Wednesday 10am-12pm, 1pm-4pm
Thursday 1pm-5pm.
Additional access to the Heritage Collection is by appointment.
The Collection is currently being catalogued and new entries are being added online weekly. Cataloguing will be a long term project so please contact the Cultural Heritage Centre if you have an enquiry about an item in the Gawler Heritage Collection but cannot find it in the catalogue.
