Due to continued vandalism at various town facilities, including Clonlea Reserve, Whitelaw Terrace (Martin’s Place), Gawler Visitor Information Centre and Gawler Oval, operational adjustments have been made while we explore long-term vandal-proofing solutions.
Council will trial new public facility opening hours from 7am to 7pm, instead of the current practice of locking public toilets around sunset. Although this earlier closing time may inconvenience some, it aims to minimise longer closures for damage repairs, ultimately benefiting the majority of users.
The trial will run until Tuesday 19 December, and a review will assess its effectiveness in reducing vandalism. If there is no benefit, the standard public facilities opening hours will resume.
Given the level of poor behaviour and ongoing damage staff have decided to engage a static security guard at the Clonlea Reserve toilet from 3pm – 7pm from 11 December - 15 December. The behaviours will monitored and inform any further engagement of security. It is disappointing that we have reached this point however, creating a safe environment for all users of our parks and facilities is of the highest importance.
