Your old playground equipment has been repurposed!
In late 2021, the Rotary Club of Gawler Light contacted Council regarding their organisation’s Rotary Overseas Recycled Playgrounds (RORP) program.
The RORP program is an initiative that involves collecting unwanted playground equipment from Councils and schools and relocating it to disadvantaged overseas communities to be rebuilt. Not only does this program bring joy to children in need, but it also reduces landfill waste by repurposing playground equipment, supporting principles of circular economy.
Seeing the opportunity for this partnership as part of Council’s playground renewal program, we have partnered with Rotary Gawler Light and the Rotary Overseas Recycled Playgrounds (RORP) initiative, to save your old playground equipment at Gawler West Playground from landfill and repurpose it for children in developing countries.
As the playground equipment at Calton Road Playground is still compliant with current Australian Standards, Council believed it would be more appropriate to donate this equipment to a local Australian community in need. After external stakeholder engagement, it was understood that the Yipirinya School in Alice Springs did not have a playground for their children and that many of their local families had never experienced the joy of playing on a playground.
In August 2022, Council officially adopted the proposal to donate the playground equipment at Calton Road Playground to Yipirinya School in the Northern Territory.
Current Update
Site works commenced during the first week of October 2023, with the tagging and dismantling of playground equipment by Rotary Gawler Light. This equipment is intended to be stored locally in South Australia for a short period of time, before being transported by the Rotary Club up to the Yipirinya School in Alice Springs.
