With the assistance of the Northern and Yorke Landscape Board the Town of Gawler is starting a restoration project on part of the South Para River Corridor.  This will occur – from the Fourteenth Street Ford and continuing upstream approximately 400m and adjacent Henry Chenoweth Reserve.

The aim of the project is to protect and enhance the native vegetation already present as well as to improve the amenity and use of the area.  This will be achieved through targeted best practice weed control and then followed up with strategically located plantings of native tube stock to further enhance and beautify the area.

River reserves are an important feature in rural as well as urban areas as they often contain important, and in some cases the only remnant native vegetation and native wildlife habitat in an area.  However, river reserves can also be a vector for the spread of introduced plants.  The project will address this issue by aligning with the priorities in the Town of Gawler’s Biodiversity Plan.

The attached map has been included to show the area where the proposed works will be carried out. Weeds that will be targeted for control include the following: Giant Reed, Ash trees, African Boxthorn, Wild Olive, Cactus and Peppercorns.
