Gawler Aquatic Centre's 60th Birthday

Published 1st December 2022

In 2022, the Gawler Aquatic Centre is celebrating 60 years of being in operation.  The Centre is a popular community venue for swimming lessons, carnivals, birthday parties, squad, lap and recreational swimming over the last 60 years.

The Gawler Aquatic Centre was officially opened on Saturday 1 December 1962 by the then Governor of South Australia, Sir Eric Bastyan, along with the Mayor of Gawler at the time, Mr Elliot Chivel Goodger. The opening in 1962 began with a parade marching from the Mill Inn Bridge to the Aquatic Centre with the Gawler Town Band heading the procession. The official opening was reported to have 3,000 people in attendance who enjoyed the new swimming pool and swimming competitions held on the day.

The Gawler Aquatic Centre has a proud history and was made possible through the efforts of local community members and organisations who formed Committees, raised funds, arranged numerous working bees and finance drives and provided volunteer labour to keep costs down. A total of £45,000 was spent on the construction of the pool, which commenced in 1958 and finished in 1962.  The Gawler Aquatic Centre has also been home to the Gawler Amateur Swimming Club since it opened in 1962 with the Club continuing to provide a family orientated swim club for all ages and abilities.

To celebrate, a Community Event will be held at the Gawler Aquatic Centre on Saturday 3 December 2022 starting at 12.00pm.  Free Activities on the day will include entry into the Centre, formalities and cutting of a 60th Birthday cake at 12.30pm as well as giveaways, an inflatable obstacle course, a BBQ hosted by Rotary Club of Gawler, Henna and much more for the whole family to enjoy.

Mayor Karen Redman encourages the entire community to come and enjoy this much-loved community facility to celebrate the 60th birthday and during the season.  “We hope to see you all at the birthday celebration on Saturday 3 December 2022 to share stories of the Centre over the years and to enjoy the wonderful facilities and activities on the day” said Mayor Karen Redman.

The Centre continues to provide activities and programs each season averaging over 60,000 visitors each season. The programs on offer continue to increase and cater for all different interests including the popular Learn to Swim Program, lap and recreational swimming, outdoor yoga, aqua aerobics, boot camp and various birthday party packages.
