Stobie Pole Artwork SAPN

Many older suburbs have stobie poles located along their local streets and main roads. Stobie poles are owned and operated by SA Power Networks (SAPN). Council and SAPN recognise that stobie pole art is an attractive way for communities to add colour and vibrancy to their streetscapes.

As outlined below, permission to paint / produce artwork on stobie poles can be sought via application to SAPN (Step 1) and Council (Step 2).

Step 1 – SAPN Permit Process

Apply for a SAPN permit here: Stobie Pole Art - SA Power Networks

Part of the SA Power Network's conditions is that approval be additionally sought from the local Council to ensure the following conditions are met:

  1. Proposed imagery of the artwork including artists names and details will need to be supplied to both SAPN and Council for their records.
  2. The artwork on the poles does not constitute commercial advertising e.g. business name or logo, political material, local messages or directions or any other material likely to offend.
  3. Engage with the residents directly adjacent the proposed stobie pole site prior to commencement and gain their approval to paint the proposed design.
  4. You are responsible for any ongoing maintenance of the artwork, and understanding if the artwork is tagged, SAPN or Council will paint over the artwork at their discretion.
  5. The use of anti-graffiti coating should be considered once completed (if the work is to be on display long term).
  6. During the painting process, consideration should be given to the safety of the participants and the public, e.g. use of cones/bollards, high visibility vests, etc.

Step 2 - Council Approval Process

  1. A copy of the proposed artwork and the SAPN permit is to be provided to Council either in person at the Gawler Administration Centre 43 High Street, Gawler or via email:

    Email: council@gawler.sa.gov.au
    Subject: Proposed Stobie Pole Artwork

  2. The Applicant must submit a completed Council 221 Application for assessment and approval (no fee required).
The online application is available here:  Section 221 Application Form | Town of Gawler Council
  3. Council staff will assess the application to issue a permit.
  4. Share your artwork. You are welcome to forward a photo of the completed stobie pole art to council@gawler.sa.gov.au
