Enjoy an incredible travelling exhibition of a giant, handmade glass mosaic scarf. SA artists have been part of this international project to support Afghan women and girls. The project is backed by the UN International Year of Glass (UNIYOG22) and involves over 1200 artists from 46 other countries. The panels are uniquely beautiful, feature intricate patterns, rich colours and are all emblematic of traditional Afghan outfits and culture.
Mosaic artists from around the globe have been working since September 2021 to bring attention to the world about the social and economic conditions of Afghan Women and Girls after the takeover of the Taliban in August 2021. Over 1200 participants from 46 countries have created a mosaic of 10 x 25 cm to be assembled as mosaic scarves. In Australia and New Zealand 466 mosaicists created a segment and seven scarf artworks were created.
Participating artists drew inspiration from Afghan motifs embroidered on a dress and made their own interpretation. These small art segments are assembled into a collective artwork. They represent the resilience of Afghan culture beyond its own borders in different parts of the world. Afghan culture will survive outside of its own country and reminds us that our own freedom is also Hanging by a Thread.
The seven scarves – artworks in Australia and New Zealand received seed funding from the UN International Year of Glass 22 and the Mosaic Association of Australia and New Zealand (MAANZ) also assisted with funding.
"The Mosaic scarf artwork is very beautiful and demonstrates all the different techniques of glass mosaic – showing the unique patterns and styles of Afghan embroidery" says Kristin Wohlers, the coordinator for the project.
The mosaic scarves will feature together at The Glassworks in Canberra, during Harmony Week in March 2024.
