Council Staff recently noticed movement in the Pioneer Park Heritage Stone Wall adjacent to the Murray Street footpath between the Cowan Street intersection and the Exchange Hotel.
Council holds public safety as its highest concern and have decided to close the footpath adjacent to the wall until such time that further independent engineering advice is available. Propping of the wall is now complete as per engineering advice.
Pioneer Park is a State Heritage Area and the investigations require specialised heritage and engineering input. Council is currently liaising with Heritage South Australia to ensure that the appropriate processes are followed in the most timely way
Council has recently commenced planning to investigate options to improve the wall with the view to develop a design for any required remediation works for a future budget bid.
It will be business as usual for the Exchange Hotel and BFT – please access them from the traffic lights at the Murray Street-Lyndoch Road intersection.
Council apologises for any inconvenience while we manage public safety.

The Town of Gawler has begun working with 'Landscape Construction Services' (LCS Landscapes) to develop two sketch designs for the new inclusive playspace at Apex Park Playground.
As part of the State Government's election commitments, Council is fortunate to have received $60,000 in grant funding through the Department of Transport and Infrastructure's Community InfrastructureGrants Program. This has increased Council's funding for the project to $190,000.
The purpose of this new inclusive playspace is to support increased participation, socialisation and active recreation for all ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds at Apex Park Playground. This will enable an environment that is sensitive to the needs of all users; providing a welcoming place where people feel comfortable yet challenged, and removing obstacles and barriers that prevent people from participating.
Council achieved a key milestone in this mission for more inclusive playspaces in 2021, with the installation of communication boards. These boards allow both adults and children to use signs to assist with non-verbal communication and more broadly, people to use public spaces in a more meaningful way.This project was an excellent example of a community driven initiative, as it was spearheaded by local resident Paige Carter, who runs Inclusive Oak.
Council is currently seeking community and stakeholder engagement, to help guide the development of these sketch designs into a fun, inspiring and inclusive playspace for our community.
If you would like to find out more information about Apex Park Playground Inclusive Playspace, please contact Hayley Edwards, Council’s Landscape Coordinator, at Hayley.Edwards@gawler.sa.gov.au.

Last year, the Town of Gawler was successful in securing $150,000 funding from the Department of Environment and Water’s ‘Greener Neighbourhoods Grants’ Program, supported by the Green Adelaide board.
In line with the program's key aims of:
* increased tree canopy cover to shade our walking and cycling routes
* revegetation to support areas affected by the Gawler Rail Electrification
* enhancement of local biodiversity and resilience to climate change
The Council plan to revegetate areas affected by the Gawler Rail Electrification and to increase tree canopy cover, to provide continuous shade along walking and cycling routes leading to five Gawler rail stations.Since last year, Council has begun working with Adelaide Hills Lawns & Gardens (AHLG) to plan out and plant approximately 300 new trees across 5 different location zones.
Since April 2023, a mix of tree species has been selected and planted to:
* enhance Gawler's biodiversity
* link local habitat corridors
* diversify our trees to increase our urban forest's resilience to climate change and pests.
This has enabled Council to take significant steps towards a more sustainable future, improving the quality of life for residents, and setting an example for other communities to follow.
In addition to this project, Council is also working with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport, to address key outcomes of our Beautification Plan by planting approximately 30 new street trees along Ryde Street, at one of our Town's key southern entrances. Council is also planting apporimately 487 street trees throughout our new developments and approximately 2000 native trees, along various locations within our linear trails and natural reserves of the South Para, North Para and Gawler Rivers.
*** Ryde Street Update ***
Due to unwellness of contractors, planting along Ryde Street is now planned to be completed mid-late September 2023.

King Street/ Bridge Street North Beautification Artwork Project
As part of the Gawler Rail Electrification Project Council received funding from the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) towards additional amenity improvements adjacent to the King Street Bridge.
Early last year, Council commissioned artwork by local artists Kira and Codi Buckskin of Ngadli Art. Their artwork,“Dhanduru Yarda Ngadlu Bammadja / Build on land for us to come and go” was supported by Council to be a feature piece in the vicinity of the King Street Bridge.
The artwork consists of five corten steel laser cut panels that are to be installed along the verge of Bridge Street North, near the path leading to Gawler Central Station.
Council has engaged precision manufacturing company Sonnex too laser cut and install the corten steel panels based on artwork supplied by Ngadli Art.
The artwork represents the old and new bridge and people coming and going. A descriptive storyboard plaque supporting the artwork will be installed near the entrance of King Street Bridge (northern side) with the artwork visible from the top of Bridge Street North.
Additional beautification works ongoing include:
- - Planting out of garden beds on either side of the King Street Bridge;
- - Council staff liaising with DIT to tidy up the railway corridor (weeds, rubbish & graffiti) and to have this occur on a regular basis;
- - Landscaping improvements of low maintenance drought tolerant plantings within the rail corridor near bridge (consideration by DIT as the rail corridor is not accessible to Council staff/public and no irrigation available on site).
Council looks forward to working with DIT to further improve the ambience at this location.

The Town of Gawler has begun working with 'LMH Consulting' to develop a new 'Playspace and Inclusivity Strategy,' to guide improvements and investment across the Council’s playgrounds over the next 15 years.
The aim of this strategy is to enable a community centred approach to planning for play, that achieves the following key objectives:
* Develop playgrounds for better health, wellbeing and connectedness
* Keep playgrounds welcoming and interesting for all children and families
* Improve the quality and diversity of the play experience
* Foster sustainable playgrounds that are resilient to a changing climate
* Partner with our community to make better playgrounds
Community and stakeholder engagement commenced in March 2023, with the launch of a public survey and feedback forms to inform the vision, objectives and key directions of the strategy, as well as provide feedback on the Town of Gawler’s existing playgrounds. This was followed by a special ‘Inclusive Play Day’ community event at Clonlea Park on Sunday, 2nd April 2023 in honour of ‘World Autism Awareness Day.
’Since then, Council has been actively engaging with key stakeholders such as Paige Carter of Inclusive Oak, who joined Council's mission for more inclusive playspaces in 2021, with the installation of communication boards. These boards allow both adults and children to use signs to assist with non-verbal communication and more broadly, people to use public spaces in a more meaningful way. This project was an excellent example of a community driven initiative and something that the strategy will support in future.
Feedback received during the community and stakeholder engagement process will be collated and used to inform the Draft Strategy, which will be launched for a second round of engagement later in the year.

Town of Gawler is pleased to announce the completion of Stage 1 of the Princes Park Recreation Hub which will provide a great recreation space for the Gawler community to enjoy.
The new recreation hub is designed with families in mind, with a new full sized basketball court, barbeque facilities, seating, and shade all forming part of the $768,000 Stage 1 project. The court has timed lighting for illuminated play until 8pm.
‘The Town of Gawler has been fortunate to receive $356,500 in grant funding from the Minister for Planning, through the State Government’s Open Space Grant Program financed through the Planning and Development Fund, toward this new asset to support an active and healthy community’ says Mayor Karen Redman.
‘This is the first investment towards delivering the vision of the Essex Park & Gawler Showgrounds Regional Sporting Precinct Master Plan, adopted by Council in 2021. Council is pleased to offer this new area for all ages to enjoy’.
The court surface is a delight to behold with colourful swirls and foursquare design, selected by the Community from three design options in May 2022. The court design provides a new vibrancy to this part of Princes Park while also offering more play options for families.

Work is set to begin during March 2024 on the long-awaited Reid Reserve Playground.
A playground at Reid Reserve has been long anticipated by the local community and has now become a reality thanks to a generous Community Infrastructure Grant from the South Australian Government. Following two rounds of engagement with our residents, we've crafted the final design based on the valuable feedback. Reid Reserve is set to cater to all age groups, offering an array of exciting features. Among these are a thrilling flying fox, an exhilarating slippery dip, a shaded picnic area for leisurely gatherings, and a half-basketball court for sports enthusiasts. The diverse amenities aim to provide an enjoyable experience for everyone in the local community and we can’t wait to see this project come to life with scheduled competition in July 2024.
