History of Council Members

The Town of Gawler has a long and rich history. Following European Settlement, the Town of Gawler became South Australia’s first regional settlement.

As rural settlers took up new land south along the coast near Adelaide and further out to the north, east, and west of the capital, their social and physical needs stimulated the growth of many new settlements. Soon followed was the formation of councils. The earliest rural councils of the 1850s were formed in an arc around Adelaide, in nearby hills districts in the Mount Lofty Ranges, the Barossa, and along the south coast with Gawler Council forming in 1857.

The local government system in South Australia is integral to the democratic system of government in Australia which provides vital economic, social and environmental support for communities. Today the community elects their Council Members every four years, and the next general elections are scheduled to occur in 2026.
